The world of stark, vertical contours, where the sparseness comes to the fore. A world with its own drive. The world of Erika Hubatschek. This is where she directed her passion and her empathetic perspective; this region, just above and just below the tree line, was her life-long photographic focus. She spared no effort in capturing with her camera everything nature has to offer there, and everything that makes it possible for man to survive and live there with – and often against – the forces of nature. The world of the mountain farmers. Considering all the possible representations of realities, Erika Hubatschek was not a multifaceted photographer. But she was driven – in her own words – by the conviction that the achievements of centuries of mountain farming merited documentation. Nature as nature worked by man. This is her inimitable terrain – for it is here that personal interest, passion, persistence, documentary ambition and in-depth knowledge of her subject combine to make these photographs possible.
